World Press Freedom Day, observed on May 3, is a moment to reflect on the indispensable role that free and independent media plays in our society. This year’s theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” spotlights the critical importance of journalism in addressing the ongoing environmental challenges and promoting social accountability.

The environmental crisis affects communities around the world, demanding urgent and coordinated action. Social accountability, which emphasizes the responsible use of public resources and transparency in governance, is integral to addressing environmental effects. It ensures that decision-makers are held accountable for their actions and that policies are in place to protect the planet and its people.

The ACA works closely with media partners and trains Citizen Journalists under the Speak Up Youth Project to advance social accountability and promote transparency in environmental issues and public resource management. By investigating the use of public resources and reporting on their impact on the environment, our media partners shine a light on potential areas of improvement and provide citizens with the information they need to advocate for positive change.

Journalists play a vital role in uncovering stories of environmental harm, identifying solutions, and holding those in power accountable. Through their in-depth reporting, they empower communities to demand better policies and practices for the planet’s health.

As we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, we want to express our gratitude to our media partners for their dedication and professionalism. Your work is essential in advancing social accountability and driving progress on environmental issues. We wish you a happy Press Freedom Day and look forward to our continued collaboration in creating a more sustainable world. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to making a difference.

The Speak Up Youth Project is implemented in partnership with BYTA FM in Choma, Sun FM on the Copperbelt, Three FM in Chipata and Voice of Kalomo in Kalomo with financial support from the German Development Cooperation.
