Digital (social) media and ICT, in general, can provide the chance for the participation of civil society members in remote areas and to overcome distances as well as to gain a wider reach and find like-minded people and communities to connect within the demand for good governance and accountability.
SpeakUp Girls Project aims at training 40 girls between the age of 15 and 30 in two pilot regions (Choma and the Copperbelt (Ndola and Kitwe)) in Zambia as citizen journalists. In a non-formal training, they will be enabled to develop and publish reports featuring issues of transparency, accountability as well as social and political participation on provided social media channels and local radio stations.
The participating girls and women will be trained in two five-day modules of non-formal education in their local areas. The young women and girls will be trained as citizen journalists with a specific focus on how to use digital media to develop and publish stories. The trainings will consist of basic human rights and accountability, journalism and formats of journalism, using a smartphone and developing video, photo or audio stories, and the usage of social media. According to the do-no-harm principle, a special focus will also lie on the legislative framework in Zambia and topics of data privacy.
The SpeakUp Girls Project on the Copperbelt is implemented in partnership with Sun FM
With financial and technical support from the German Development Cooperation.
