The overall goal of the project is to capacitate young people in three (3) constituencies and through them the wider youth in Zambia to participate in the 2021 general elections understanding the election as a democratic accountability event in which they, as right-holder, assess and contract duty bearers to govern in citizen best interests.
The project focuses on capacitating citizens to see themselves as right holders and the vote as mandating duty bearers to govern the country in the best interests of voters. The project is therefore be underpinned by the Rights Based Approach to governance. Critically, the project aims to contribute to improvement of voter numbers. The project is being implemented in areas in which voter apathy has previously been identified, in Mukushi North and Serenje constituencies were among the 10 lowest voting constituencies in 2016 as well as the Matero Constituency of Lusaka Province. Mukushi North and Serenje are identified for being constituencies that had a low voter turnout in 2016 while Matero is selected for being a populous constituency with high numbers of young people. Matero being in Lusaka is also an influential area in terms of advocacy. The project advocacy will target the whole country in keeping with organizational strategy.
